9 Ways to succeed in business Part one – You don’t have to have a dream

A bit of a radical start I know, but it’s true.  You don’t have to have a dream to succeed in business!

Not everyone is blessed with a guiding light or a burning desire to follow a certain career path or bring a product or idea to market.  If you are great, and I wish you every success in the world but this article is not for you.

But many of us aren’t so inspired!

We go into business as an alternative to employment as there weren’t any ‘proper jobs’ around, we go into business because we were told to by family or our peers, we go into business as we didn’t know what else to do?

But does this mean that we cannot be successful?  Oh no…we just have to go about it in a different way.

For us the burning desire, the long-term plan or the strategic vision is not the way.

Its time to go small!

Be micro-ambitious by making and achieving micro improvements every day in your business.

  • Look to increase your income by at least 1% a year.
  • Look to reduce your costs by at least 1% a year.

This way you are beating inflation, your profits are growing so by every conceivable measure you are successful.

But now you have a taste for success, this modest improvement might not be enough so have a passionate dedication to achieving short-term goals.  No goal should take longer than a week.

  • Get a ‘thank you’ or ‘job well done’ from each customer.
  • Ask for a referral or testimonial from each happy customer.
  • Identify one person each week who could help to improve your business.
  • Identify one opportunity each week for someone else you know.

Small is beautiful, small works and small is achievable!

So better to achieve with passion, dedication and vigour a never ending stream of short term goals & micro opportunities than to fail in your life’s work to achieve your dream.
